How the Tank Works
The contents of the septic tank separate into three layers:
- Floating scum layer - soaps, greases, toilet paper, etc.
- Liquid layer- water, liquid, and suspended solids
- Sludge - heavy organic and inorganic materials at the bottom of the tank.
Naturally-occuring bacteria in the sewage begin to break down organic materials in the tank. This is often referred to as primary treatment. Pathogens in the waste are NOT destroyed in the septic tank. Bacteria in the septic tank prepare the wastewater for final treatment in the drainfield.

Overtime your drain field will form a biomass matt due to soaps, oils and grease, and other products flush thru your septic system.
Characteristics of a drain field not functioning as design. The area of the field will be seeping water to the surface and producing a strong sewer odor. As the field fails further sewage will eventually being backing up into the house. When these characteristics occur the drain field, needs to be repaired or in other words the drain field needs a new system or needs to be rejuvenated.
Our trained crew will purge a horizontal probe into the drain field to force air into the drain field. The Terralift uses a long narrow probe and integral pneumatic hammer to penetrate soil to depths of four to eight feet. When the probe is inserted into the soil pressurize air is released to break up the biomass and inserting polystyrene beads into the fissures and cracks. The air will expand in a form of an umbrella. The insertion of the polystyrene beads maintains the percolation of liquids and allowing your system to drained as designed.
The unit is design to operate across a drain field when the field is wet preventing minimal damage to the yard. The method of rejuvenated is demonstrated in the diagram below. The red X is the grid across the drain field and each red x is probe forcing air into the subsurface of the field
